I was working on illustrations for the children’s book we’re writing, Death is Real, yesterday at a McDonald’s play place while Tabi was playing. I had my laptop and Wacom tablet out which, of course, attracted a number of children to ask what I was doing. Asked if I “made books” and asked about the book itself.
One little kid, a 5-year-old, asked me what the book was about and since Tabi was there, I redirected the question to her, “hey Tabs, can you tell them what our book is about?”
“Death!” she said excitedly, “it’s about how death is reeeeeeeal.”
The little kid was surprised, “but that’s a big kid topic!”
Now it was my turn to be surprised, “I’m not so sure. Tabi is very anxious about death and she’s not yet a big kid. That’s why we want to make this book, to help little kids understand it and feel less anxious about it too.”
